Lesson19

First listen and then answer the question.

When will the writer see the play?

"The play may begin at any moment," I said.

"It may have begun already," Susan answered.

I hurried to the ticket office. "May I have two tickets please?" I asked.

"I"m sorry, we"ve sold out," the girl said.

  "What a pity!" Susan exclaimed.

Just then, a man hurried to the ticket office.

"Can I return these two tickets?" he asked.

  "Certainly," the girl said.

I went back to the ticket office at once.

"Could I have those two tickets please?" I asked.

"Certainly," the girl said, "but they"re for next Wednesday"s performance. Do you still want them?"

"I might as well have them," I said sadly.

  hurry v.

  ticket office 售票处

  pity n.

  exclaim v. 大声说

  return v. 退回

  sadly adv.

1 The play may begin at any moment.

  It may have begun already.

  2 hurry to+spl.

We hurried to the airport.

  3 What a pity!

  这是What+a/an/the+名词 的感叹句形式。

  ①What+名词

What fun!

  ②What+(a/an)+形容词+名词

What a said story!

  ③What+ a/an+形容词+名词(+主语)+谓语

例句:What a delicious dinner you made!

What happy girls they are.

  4 exclaim [

She screamed when seeing the devastating car accident.

  5 Could I ...please?

  6 might as well...

  与may as well意思相同,只不过前者更委婉。

Lesson20

First listen and then answer the question.

Why is fishing the writer"s favourite sport?

Fishing is my favourite sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am even less lucky. I never catch anything--not even old boots. After having spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. "You must give up fishing!" my friends say. "It"s a waste of time." But they don"t realize one important thing. I"m not really interested in fishing. I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all!

  catch (caught,caught) v. 抓到

  fisherman n.

  boot n. 靴子

  waste n. 浪费

  realize v.

1 Fishing is my favourite sport.

I often fish for hours without catching anything.

  2 worry [

  worry about /over sth

  sth worry sb.

例句:She is always worrying about her figure.

But this does not worry me.

  worry sb. with sth.

例句:It"s impolite to worry neighbours with noise at night.

Instead of singing in the KTV, we went to the riverside.

4 After having spent whole mornings on the river, I always go home with an empty bag.

She is confident of being awarded this scholarship.

He was very proud of having been selected as a volunteer for the World Expo.

  5 realize [

We didn"t realizing his appearing at first.

To help realize the dreams of students is one of teachers’ tasks.

Lesson21

First listen and then answer the question.

Why do people think the writer is mad?

Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad. I live near an airport and passing planes can be heard night and day. The airport was built years ago, but for some reason it could not be used then. Last year, however, it came into use. Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise. I am one of the few people left. Sometimes I think this house will be knocked down by a passing plane. I have been offered a large sum of money to go away, but I am determined to stay here. Everybody says I must be mad and they are probably right.

  mad adj. 发疯

  reason n. 原因

  sum n. 量

  determined adj.

1 Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad.

  drive sb. mad /crazy

They drove away the little dog.

2 passing planes can be heard night and day.

The falling leaves indicate the coming of autumn.

  3 come into use

  在使用时直接用主动语态,sth come into use。

例句:This bridge will come use next year.

He asked for a large sum of money to drive her to the hospital.

5 Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise.

6 but for some reason it could not be used then.

Mary was elected as the new president of the company.
