"let’s go to the fair, matt," his wife said. "we haven’t been anywhere for a long time."

matt thought about this for a while. he knew he would have to spend money at the fair. at last he said, "all right, but i’m not going to spend much money. we’ll look at things, but we won’t buy anything. "

they went to the fair and looked at all the things to buy. there were many things matt’s wife wanted to buy, but he would not let her spend any money.

then, in a nearby field, they saw a small airplane.

"fun flights!" the notice said, " $$ 10 for 10 minutes.

matt had never been in an airplane and he wanted to go on a fun flight. however, he didn’t want to have to pay for his wife, as well.

matt agreed, and got into the small airplane with his wife.

now in arabic, we can make this definite by adding the definite article “al.“ so this is al-shalan -- the unknown thing. and this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics, such as this 10th century derivation of proofs.

the problem for the medieval spanish scholars who were tasked with translating this material is that the letter sheen and the word shalan cant be rendered into spanish because spanish doesnt have that sh, that “sh“ sound. so by convention, they created a rule in which they borrowed the ck sound, “ck“ sound, from the classical greek in the form of the letter kai.

later when this material was translated into a common european language, which is to say latin, they simply replaced the greek kai with the latin x. and once that happened, once this material was in latin, it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks for almost 600 years.

but now we have the answer to our question. why is it that x is the unknown? x is the unknown because you cant say “sh“ in spanish. (laughter) and i thought that was worth sharing.

我们考试的时候，听力填词或者做题都需要我们掌握词汇，听懂英语。这是一门语言，我们就应该进行练习，多说多看，如果有时间，我们可以看一些英语书籍，锻炼自己的英语学习能力，学习更多的词汇。学习不可能一蹴而就，全靠每天努力学习，我们学习英语的重点分为单词，语法，听力这三方面。

对于单词，我们就应该多记多背，单词需要每天记忆，而且需要重复记忆，如果你当天记住了这个单词，但你却不愿意一直复习，总会有一天忘记。我们除了学习新单词，更要复习已经学过的单词，现在我们需要学习的单词比较少，那我们就应该把他们完全掌握。比如我们每天学习十个单词，两天后我们就必须要再次温习我们学过的单词，如果这样感觉记忆非常累，那么我们可以通过阅读英语文章来加强单词记忆，并且每天坚持，只要我们每天都按时学习，掌握更多的单词我们的基础就能够打牢固，这样就方便了接下来的学习。

掌握了单词后，我们就应该认真学习语法，毕竟西方的说话习惯，与我们不同，而且表达的意思也有出入，我们不但要掌握各种句型，更要明白如何运用，现在有很多有关语法的书籍可以供我们参考，老师上课所讲的语法比较少，我们也可以利用时间多学一些语法，学习语法不但可以让我们掌握英语说话习惯，也能够让我们复习巩固所学的单词。对我们的帮助很大。练习语法的最好办法，就是多做题，通过不同的题型练习自己的语法熟练度，而且各种语法我们必须要背诵掌握下来，当我们记住的语法多了，习惯成自然，就不会觉得这些语法难以接受。

在英语考试中听力是锻炼我们英语沟通能力，如果我们学习了英语，却不会用英语沟通，而且别人说的英语自己也听不懂，那不是等于没学吗。我们之所以学习英语最主要的目的就是为了更好沟通，所以想要练习自己的听力，我们不但要多听英语磁带，更要多说，要纠正自己的发音，勤学苦练中能够学到更多。每天不能忘记自己的学习任务，坚持学习。可以利用早自习时间好好练习。
