it is quite common that many companies have dress codes and the violation of those codes may even cause fines, which has aroused many complaints among people who are sensitive to their appearance. they believe employers’ over emphasis on dress codes is meaningless but makes them uncomfortable in the office. however, in my mind, it is definitely necessary to have rules on dressing.
admittedly, the quality of one’s work is much more important than his or her appearance. the healthy development of a company to a large extent depends on employees’ work effectiveness and efficiency which therefore deserves more attention from managers. to generate an office atmosphere in which employees feel at ease is one of the commonly adopted methods to boost employees’ work efficiency. therefore, it is reasonable to allow employees to dress as they like. on the contrary, the strict dress codes may prevent people from choosing clothes to de-emphasize features they perhaps like less about themselves, which makes them self-conscious.
however, for most professions and companies, to have dress codes is to prevent employees from wearing eccentric clothes or clothes that cause troubles to their work. in an office, an employee’s pinky hair and hip-hop jumper may distract others’ attention, and leave bad impression to clients visiting the company. in addition, for certain professions, to dress appropriately is essential for them to successfully carry out the work. for instance, it is necessary for a lawyer to wear suits while meeting clients, as the suits not only demonstrate his professional competence but also show his attitudes and confidence. otherwise, to wear casual clothes only makes him lose trust from others.
to sum up, a company needs effective dress codes to regulate employees’ dressing which is vital for companies’ development.
some people believe that employers should not be concerned about the way their employees dress, only the quality of their work.

the last decade has witnessed the tremendous growth of e-commerce, which is clearly manifested by an increasing number of people shopping online. gradually, online stores boasting unparalleled advantages have changed people’s purchasing behaviors and tend to replace physical stores. in my mind, this is a positive change in general.
admittedly, online stores’ strong momentum of development will erode the business of traditional stores and even pose threat to their survival. compared to online stores, physical stores have much higher operation costs, mainly including rents and employee salaries. with too many consumers attracted to online stores, physical ones have to face the decline of business volume. consequently, due to the shrinkage of business, they have to lay off redundant employees, reduce orders with suppliers and even fail to make payments with business partners. in fact, there are many physical stores that have to struggle on the edge of bankruptcy.
however, as online stores can not only play the role of physical stores in both people’s daily life and economic development, but also bring more benefits to social progress, to replace some physical stores is a positive trend. without leaving home, people are able to make a perfect order by choosing from various kinds of commodities and comparing their prices and performance. breaking the restriction of time and space, online shopping in fact encourages people to buy more by making it much more convenient and flexible. the increase of people’s purchase will in turn promote economic development by generating job opportunities and tax revenues.
to sum up, although the negative impact on physical stores generated by the thriving of online shopping may cause problems in short term, the replacement of physical stores is a positive tendency in general.

the wealth gap between 1st world countries and 3rd world countries seems to be increasing. how can we reduce this gap? do you think that developed countries have a duty to assist developing countries in every way?

every day the rich countries in the world get richer and the poor countries get poorer. can we reduce this gap? of course we can. the question is whether the people in power want to do it?
reducing the wealth gap can be achieved by cancelling third world debt, cancelling trade and farming subsidies so that third world countries can compete, getting rid of third world corruption and investing and building in third world countries using local people and skills and allowing them ownership of businesses. there are other things as well. unfortunately there is no profit in business for first world countries to do these things. some will do them but most will not. the ordinary man on the street wants things to be better for poorer countries and the politicians say that they will help but the politicians will in the end do what business tells them to do. politicians also rightly feel they have a duty to protect their own countries and keeping economically dominant is part of this duty. creating effective competition for their own country?s businesses is not part of what they are expected to do.
this then leads on to whether i believe that developed countries have a duty to help the developing countries. yes, i do. as an individual i believe that we have a duty to assist the poorer countries with their development in all aspects. we can provide teachers and education and doctors on the small scale and on the larger scale the things that i have talked about in the previous paragraph. can we do this? yes. will we do this? see the previous paragraph again.
in conclusion you can see that i believe that there is a split between what would happen in a perfect world and what actually happens. we have a duty to reduce the wealth gap between developed and developing countries and we can do it, but it is unlikely that this will happen quickly.
