　　When I realised that Super Saturday was unfolding as one of the greatest sporting nights in British history, I ran upstairs and woke my kids. I did not want them to miss out on memories that will stay with them lifetimes.

I had my doubts about whether the Games were worth ￡9 billion. 　　I’m an optimist. I believe these Games have a power to change sport in this country. I think questions will be asked now about school sports and Government backing and why, for example, British Cycling gets so much right and other sports less so.

　　It made me angry on that same Super Saturday when so much goodwill of the generated towards the athletes turned to scorn against the footballers who lost out to South Korea on penalties. On Twitter, there was that mood of “typical footballers, all that money and they still let you down”. But what had footballers’earnings got to do with anything at the Games? It’s not like Ryan Giggs was doing it for the money.

　　These Olympics have also made me wonder about training and sports science. I am regarded as a hard trainer but I have heard some of the Olympians explain their regimes and it’s definitely made me question whether we are reaching the physical peak.
　　这届奥运会还让我领略到了训练和运动科技的威力。我已经被人视作是那种训练非常刻苦的球员了，但是当我听一些奥运选手讲解他们的训练和管理体系时，这引起了我对自己的质疑：我是否真的已经达到了体能的极限。 I have been to the Velodrome in Manchester and trained alongside some of the cyclists. It is humbling to see how hard they work.A lot of what I have seen at the Olympics is humbling. These are athletes who dedicate themselves to their sports for the love of it, and with no guarantee of fame and fortune. Despite perceptions, that is not so different from a lot of footballers.

　　Football shouldn’t be embarrassed by the riches it generates. The Premier League is a massive success story. We should celebrate its return, while asking ourselves what we can learn from these unforgettable Games.
