Cashier: Paper or plastic today? This is a phrase you won’t hear next year in Los Angeles. The city has joined several other major California 2)municipalities with a ban on plastic grocery bags.
Resident: I have no problem with plastic being banned. I mean it reduces waste and it doesn’t end up in 3)landfills or in the ocean. It’s a petroleum product.
Shoppers will have to bring their own bags to the check-out line or pay 10 cents for a paper bag. Plastic bag manufacturers complain that the new law will make manufacturing jobs disappear.
With environmentalists pushing for a state-wide ban on plastic bags, people are wondering how they’ll line their garbage bins and pick up after their pets.
Heal the Bay says Californians use 12 billion 4)disposable bags per year and only 5% get recycled. Whether it’s doggie doodoo or dirty 5)diapers, plastic bags are useful. They’re also free and disposable, but environmentalists say we’ve taken them for granted for too long, and they’re not actually free or disposable.
Under the new law, produce bags, newspaper bags and dry cleaners’ bags are still allowed. And there’s still six months to 6)stock up before the ban goes into effect.
