Lawrence who vividly reveals the problem of love caused in different social environment, where created love crisis - distorted, unhealthy, irresponsible and insignificant love at that time. This essay intends to make an analysis of the problem of love in both short stories written by D.H. Lawrence affected by the unstable time.
Key words:D.H. Lawrence, the problem of love, unhealthy, distorted, wartime, mechanization time
D.H. Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930 ). has keen criticism on society which caused the complexity of human relationships between men and women. He expressed a strong reaction of the dehumanizing effect by wartime or industrialization where caused the unhealthy and distorted love between men and women.
In the short story “Tickets, please” and “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter”, both written by D.H. Lawrence, both reveals the problem of love caused in difficult Social environment. Lawrence not only condemns the civilized world of mechanism that distorts all natural relationships between men and women, but also advocates a return to nature.
"Tickets, Please" is a tale of wartime Europe which discuss how in the early 1900"s, men went to war and women went to work, marking a major change in society and gender roles as well as revealing the problem of love at wartime. Their attitude towards love is distorted, unhealthy, irresponsible and insignificant which created affective disturbance between men and women and finally became love crisis at wartime. In “Tickets, Please”, Lawrence describes the playboy image of John Thomas, the intimate performance between Thomas and Annie as well as Annie’s barbaric violence revenge to Thomas, all these three fields are emerge the problem of love step by step in the story. We take Annie for example, who “falls love” for Thomas on a special occasion and as times goes, she not only becomes more and more possessive but also she wants more than a flirtation from him, but just at this time Thomas lets her down and picks up another girl, this causes Annie decides to take revenge for him. One evening Annie arranged all the girls together and managed to attract Thomas into their waiting-room at the depot to carry out her revenge. The girls are all questioning him closely and acting a force on him to make a choice from one of them for his wife, finally he unwillingly chooses Annie who, far from being proud and contented, falls prey to conflicting feelings. Subsequently, Lawrence described one violent reaction in the story which puts the plot more impressive. From above, we can easily find that the major change in society at wartime caused the change of gender roles as well as the twisted love between men and women. Thomas has an affair to many girls, the unhealthy intimate behaviors between Thomas and Annie takes revenge to Thomas as did not get the love she wanted all represented the problem of love at wartime. They even do not know what real love is, and how to get and operate with genuine love.
