  I know what the caged bird feels, 1)alas!   When the sun is bright on the 2)upland slopes;
  When the wind 3)stirs soft through the springing grass,
  And the river flows like a stream of glass;
  When the first bird sings and the first bud 4)opes,
  And the faint perfume from its 5)chalice 6)steals――
  I know what the caged bird feels!

  I know why the caged bird beats his wing
  Till its blood is red on the cruel bars;
  For he must fly back to his perch and cling
  When he 7)fain would be on the 8)bough 9)a-swing;
  And a pain still 10)throbs in the old, old scars
  And they pulse again with a 11)keener sting――
  I know why he beats his wing!

  I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
  When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore, ――
  When he beats his bars and he would be free;
  It is not a carol of joy or glee,
  But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core,
  But a plea, that upward to Heaven he 12)flings――
  I know why the caged bird sings!

  当太阳照在山坡上;
  而河流如一弯玻璃浆液流淌;

  直到血染红那残酷的笼杆;
  那时,它会在枝上欣然跃动;

  当它拍打笼杆,渴望获得自由;

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings(《我知道笼中鸟为何歌唱》)。
