  Anna: Eric?
Eric: Hey, Anna! Door’s open. C’mon in.
Anna: Wow, you’ve really emptied this place out.
Eric: It’s surprising how much stuff you can collect in seven years on the job.
Anna: I thought your last day wasn’t until tomorrow.
Eric: Yeah, ①but I wanted to get a head start. It’s gonna
be pretty emotional saying goodbye, and 1)hauling all my stuff with me at the same time might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back if you know what I mean.
Anna: I’m picking up what you’re putting down. Not gonna be easy, hey?
Eric: Not at all. I mean, I’m really looking forward to the new position, but it’s not like I’m leaving here ’cause I’m unhappy.
Anna: So why are you leaving?
Eric: I simply got a better opportunity. I’ve loved working here, but I feel like there isn’t much more I can learn.
Anna: I hear ya. Between you, me, and the fence post, I’ve actually been thinking of doing the same.
Eric: Wow, I wouldn’t have expected that. ②Anything on the horizon?
Anna: Not really. ③It’s just something I’ve been 2)toying with.
Eric: Just make sure that when the time comes, you do it right.
  Anna: What do you mean?
Eric: Well, you seem to be giving this a lot of thought, which is a great start. I’d say the first thing is to make sure you give enough notice.
  Anna: What’s 3)appropriate?
  Eric: At least two weeks.
Anna: Seems fair. Any other advice?
Eric: Don’t ignore your replacement—try to do everything you can to make his or her life easy. ④They’ll have some big shoes to fill.
  Anna: Haha, ⑤you’re sweet.
Eric: Hey, you know I’m right. Oh, ⑥and don’t drop the ball. Make sure you keep giving 100% right up until the last day. Anna: That won’t be hard. Anything else?
Eric: Last but not least, never leave without saying goodbye.
Anna: Of course not! That would be too horrible.
Eric: Glad you feel that way. Anyway, Anna, I gotta get back to packing up.
Anna: Hey, no problem. I’ll catch you tomorrow.
