In his groundbreaking work The Golden Peaches 01: Samarkand of Tang Exotics, American scholar Edward H. Sehafer extolled Tibetan silver and goldsmiths; it appears that Tibet must also be given an important place among the nations whose craftsmen contributedto the culture of Tang Dynasty. To judge from the records of tributes and gifts from Tibet toTang Dynasty, which repeatedly list large objects of gold, remarkable for their beauty, rarityand excellent workmanship, the Tibetan goldsmiths were the wonder of the medieval world."The literature of the dynasties in the Central Plains recorded that the gold and silverware ofTubo Kingdom were of wonderful quality and could more than hold its own against its Tangcounterparts made with highly sophisticated techniques. For example, according to the annals,in 657 (the second year of Xianqing), the King of Tubo sent envoys to present a miniature goldencity to Tang Dynasty. Miniature animals such as lions, elephants, camels and horses stood on thecity walls, with riders on their backs. Among other tribute items were gold vessels like urns andpolo balls.
