Abstract: Following the trend of globalization, English has been taken as the most important international language connecting people in every corner of the world. English (as a foreign language) learning, in this way, becomes an irreplaceable part of teaching curriculums in many countries. The heat of English learning is encouraging, while the learning results are worrying. A large number of non-native English learners have grasped complex grammar rules and thousands of vocabularies, but only a minority of them can establish and maintain harmonious communication with native speakers of English. One of the main reasons is that, most English teachers have drawn too much attention to improving students’ grammatical competence at the cost of pragmatic competence-the ability of comprehending and applying universal principles to make use of English for successful communicative interactions with different people in various sociocultural contexts (Celce-Murcia, Marianne and Elite Olshtain, 2000,p.20) .
This paper intends to analyze two fundamental and internalized principles that have strong influence on pragmatic competence: Cooperative Principe (CP) and Politeness Principle ( PP), during which the application of them in EFL classroom discourse will be discussed along with some brief suggestions at the end of the essay.
Key words: cooperative principle, politeness principle, EFL, communicative interactions
