AUS-developed treatment for sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD)is being refined with the help of the Visualization Centre of the University of Reading in the UK.
The virtual lraq simulation treatment, which was designed at the University of Southern California(USC),is‘fully-immersive’.‘It was developed as part of an exposure therapy programme that allows soldiers suffering from PTSD to relive and confront psychological trauma.Promising results have been obtained from the first handful of patients treated in the US.
The USC treatment sees patients talk through their trauma with a therapist while wearing a Head Mounted Display that immerses them in a virtual reality battlefield. The therapist can adjust the conditions and the level of stress-generating activity as the treatment progresses.
Professor Paul Sharkey。a director of the University of Reading’s Visualization Centre, said:“Through asking patients to weal"headsets.there is a potential risk of heightening the trauma.as this is akin to putting on a helmet in the field.”
Sharkey said:“In the initial stage of the research at Reading.low-level studies will be conducted to get a feel for the differences. But the next stage will see collaborations with local psychologists and trials involving PTSD patients.”
The USC project began in 2004 with funding from the US Office of Naval Research.UItimately it is hoped that this service can be offered to the UK Ministry of Defence.providing that funding can be found.
Professor Sharkey pointed out that the economic benefits of successfully treating FTSD were considerable.quite apart from the benefit to patients.
According to the Veterans Administration.there are more than19,000 Gulf War veterans in the US suffering from PTSD.
