Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really

like modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is pave

enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in materials original ways. It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist‟s failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people

do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can‟t judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The

modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.

Multiple choice. Choose the best answers.

51. Some people hate everything that is modern because _______.

B. they find it hard to accept modern things

C. they take their standards of perfection from the Greek

A. it is true to say artists fail in their work

B. it is untrue to say artists fail in their work

C. it is true to say some artists fail in their work

53. The writer thinks the failure of a building _______.

A. means nothing B. concerns others

C. concerns only the artist D. concerns all the people in the world

54. The writer thinks that _________.

A. we can‟t judge buildings by the ancient standards

B. we can‟t judge all the buildings by the ancient standards

C. we can‟t judge all the modern buildings by the ancient standards

D. we can‟t judge modern buildings

55. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The sentence means _____.

A. the ancient architects had no technology

B. the modern architects use more advanced technology

C. the modern buildings are advanced because they are completely different from the

The water we drink and use is running short in the world. We all have to learn how to stop wasting our limited water. One of the steps we should take is to find ways of reusing it.

Experiments have already been done in this field.

Today in most large cities, fresh water is used only once, then it runs into waste system. But it is possible to pipe the used water to a purifying factory. There it can be filtered and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just as it were fresh from a spring.

But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. Then we could turn to the oceans. All we‟d have to do to make use of the seawater on earth is to get rid of the salt. This process is called desalinization, and it is already in use in many parts of the world.

Multiple choice. Choose the best answers.

Ways to Introduce Yourself to an Individual

Introductions can range from formal to casual and even playful. Here are some examples to get the conversation started.

1. Make eye contact. Eye contact shows that you‟re engaged in the interaction,as well as displaying confidence. If you‟re not comfortable looking straight into someone‟s eyes, stare at the point between their eyepows — they won‟t notice the difference.

2. Smile. It is important to keep a genuine, pight smile(and fresh peath, too ). Your smile is your best icepeaker — it draws people in.

3. Offer a handshake. A firm hand-shake,once again, demonstrates your self-confidence. Get the grip just right, though — you don‟t want to peak the other person‟s hand. Try squee-zing slightly with your fingers and not your thumb ,and release the hand-shake after two or three seconds.

4. Tell the other person your name, and ask for theirs. If the introduction is formal, say “Hello,I„m [first name] [last name].”If it‟s informal, you can say “Hi,I‟m [first name].”

Immediately after you„ve stated your name, ask for the other person‟s name by saying “And you are... ?”in a questioning tone. When you learn the other person„s name, repeat it by saying “It‟s a pleasure to meet you,John.” or “Nice to meet you,Jane.”

Repeating the name will help you remember it,and give the introduction a more personal touch.

Giving a nickname is absolutely okay, but always give notice it‟s a nickname. For instance, say “My name‟s Mike, but they call me „The Situation"." Or “my name is Nicole, but they call

me „Snooki‟.

5. Reveal a little bit of your background. It depends on the context of the conversation, but start off by telling the other person something about yourself. You might start off with where you‟re from, what you do for a living,or why you want to meet this person. Whatever you use,it should be a springboard for more conversation. You may tell a little bit of your background in order to start your conversation. Telling someone where you work and your title is appropriate and may lead to many conversation topics.

6. Close the conversation. After you‟ve met someone for the first time, you should end the conversation by restating that you enjoyed meeting them. If the interaction was formal ,say something like“Mrs. Jones,I‟m delighted to have met you. I hope we can talk again soon.” If your conversation was informal, you could say “ It was great meeting you,Jane. Hope to see you around .”

Read the text again and decide whether the following statements are true or false.

61)____In a conversation, you show confidence by looking into the other‟s eyes.

62)____When making handshakes, take firm hold of the other‟s hand and rub the back of his hand with your thumb.

63)____On formal occasions ,both your first name and family name are used to introduce yourself .

64)____Nicknames are used only if you let the other know it‟s a nickname.

65)____To close a formal conversation, you might say:“Nice to see ya. Drop me a line”.
