Abstract—The development of rural house construction in Northern China is slower than Southern part. It is necessary to study energy saving technology to improve the living condition of rural residents. Considering local economy, technology and energy saving, etc, this paper presents the main factors and design strategy and technology methods that rural house should follow. Appropriate renewable material and optimum construction technology of envelope are stated.
Keywords-energy saving technology; new rural house; envelope construction; renewable energy
  I. Introduction
According to the statistics, the living space for rural residents has been up to 25 billion square meters, which is the 62.5% of the total residential construction area in China. Meanwhile, the accompanying facts are some deserving attentive problems, such as energy consumption, natural environment destruction, living condition and so on.
In Northern China, the average outdoor temperature in heating season is under -10℃, and the day of heating in winter is increased from south to north, such as Shenyang is 151 days, and Harbin is 182 days. In cold area of Northern China, it has a severe cold and long winter, namely the low weather is one of the challenges that northern traditional rural house faces. And envelope construction, which divides the indoor and outdoor spaces, is the receiver of various climates and complicated physical circumstances, the maintainer of living condition, and also the keeper of comfort. Through analyzing the present status of rural house in Northern China, several conclusions on design strategy and methods are presented in the following contents.
II. Analysis of rural house situation in cold areas
  A. Shortage of Planning and Designing
Though the architectural technologies and materials have been developed greatly during the past few decades, rural houses still exist in traditional modes—without overall planning, architectural design, energy consumption analysis, and present a picture of disorganized form. It will undoubtedly affect residential condition and energy saving.
  B. Backward Architectual Material and Technology

Most houses in rural area are traditional brick houses, the thickness of wall is 370cm or 490cm. Though great changed have taken place in building materials and technology, newly built houses in rural area have little change in structure and some renovation in rural houses. Walls are still traditional brick, windows are double layer wooden frame glazing even the north side, and the doors are wooden or wrapped with iron. During the winter, the indoor average temperature is around 10℃ to 15℃, which is quite low, discomfortable, and energy—efficient. Since the low temperature, surfaces on the corners of wall usually get dewed and frosted heavily, to be worse, the walls may become mildewed, and it would worsen the living condition.
