China’s mobile Internet is growing rapidly and keeps generating new industrial patterns, business patterns, commercial modes and considerable economic benefits.
However, behind the great prosperity, China’s mobile Internet industry is still facing a huge challenge. It is an urgent problem currently faced by China’s mobile Internet that how China should change it from the “most exciting market of the world in the mobile Internet era” to a leader and innovative region of the industry.
Only if China makes technological breakthroughs can it truly win the right to speak globally.
The CEO of Apple uses the word “unimaginable” to describe the sales in the Chinese market. China is turning into the most exciting market of the world in the mobile Internet era.
However, in the industrial chain of the global mobile Internet, China is just a super-large market, a manufacturing base and investment destination with good return, but not an innovative origin.
The lake of fundamental and core technologies and the insufficiency of innovation ability have been the “Achilles’ Heel” of China for a long period. Currently, in a lot of mobile Internet applications and commercial modes in China, relevant U.S. products still could be seen.
A more practical issue is that the rise of the mobile Internet has led to a “super aggregation of intellectual property rights.”The associate director of the Information and Network Research Department of the Planning and Design Institute of the China Academy of Telecommunication Research Xu Zhiyuan said that, since the patents of the smart phone
covers the information technology industry’s four most important technological realms of the mobile communication, operating system, mobile terminal and Internet, patents of mobile intelligence terminal giants almost cover all core technologies of the entire information technology industry.
In the intelligent terminal operating system and core hardware (chips) realms which are two core technological realms of the mobile Internet, China’s developments are also not optimistic.
“In the current new environment, China urgently needs to make innovations for its national innovation mode based on the market mechanisms.” Xu suggests that, China needs to change its innovation mode from a single-point or single-link innovation mode under the governmental support into an overall industrial-ecology innovation mode under the governmental coordination and marketization, strengthen its role in the scientific innovation management and organization, and then form its industrial policy system and innovation system facing the entire industrial ecological system instead of a certain technology or industrial link.
Only by respecting innovation and making competitions orderly can make China get rid of the title of “copycat.”
The technological innovation and industrial growth both closely connect with a healthy and mature market environment. In this area, China’s mobile Internet realm still has a lot of gaps to fill. The U.S.-based Business Week once gave a “3C”assessment to China’s Internet: Copycats, Super Competitive and Copyright Issue.
The “jungle laws” of the desktop Internet era, including the homogeneous competition, illegal copy, piracy and vicious attacks among competitors, have turned into great barriers for the growth of the mobile Internet.
“The environment is the most important thing for the innovation,” an engineer from the China Academy of Telecommunication Research under the Ministry of Industry and Information technology of China Yu Xiaohui said, “With a good environment, our market potential, innovative spirit and current foundation will allow us to cope with various competitions relatively easily.”
Only through broadening the field of vision can China go from the Chinese market to global market.
The Global Mobile Internet Conference 2012 recently held in Beijing attracted many Chinese and foreign enterprises. Many globally-renowned mobile Internet companies, including the “Angry Birds,” “Talking Tom Cat” and“Fruit Ninja,” sent senior officers to the conference. Compared to aggressive spirits of the foreign enterprises, the Chinese enterprises’ performances in the global market are not satisfying. For example, in the mobile application service realm, China still has an obvious deficit.
Experts believe that Asian countries and regions including China use the mobile phone more fully than other countries, and meanwhile, China’s complex technological environment with so many operating systems and terminals is giving more tests to the Chinese enterprises and makes them more adaptive. “We are standing at a very good position given by the times and should play our ‘cards’well.” they said.
