1.Introduction
Extensive reading as an approach compared with intensive reading has been recommended by a lot of scholars for many years, for the benefits it brings to develop learners language proficiency.Al-Homoud and Schmitt(2009)in their research article “Extensive reading in a challenging environment: a comparison of extensive and intensive reading approaches in Saudi Arabia”,have reported to what extend the actual classroom environment extensive reading approach will fit in.In this article I looked the current practice for the teaching of reading in secondary school of China.By analyzing the research article mentioned above,I discussed the effect of extensive reading may have on my teaching context, and how it could be applied appropriately and successfully.
2.Current teaching practice in secondary school of China
2.1 Features of the current teaching practice
Reading has always been a great concern of the secondary schools classroom teaching in china. In China, intensive reading is the traditional and pervasive model employed in secondary school: students first read the same assigned text under the instruction and with the interpretation of the teachers, and then do the reading exercises provided by the course book, mainly in the form of multiple choice questions, clozes, and comprehension questions. The dull and controlled teaching model is far from improving students reading competences for they may rely heavily on the teacher.
2.2 problems of the current teaching practice
The teaching focus often shift form the development of reading ability and comprehension of the text to meeting the requirements of examinations. Thus grammar and vocabulary are too much emphasized. The results are what can be seen from the problems existing in students reading:
2.2.1 Insufficient of background knowledge.
Reading are only limited to the short duration time which are five 45-minutes classes every week in general.Except the short text they get in the class, hardly any extra reading being done but grammar-focus exercises instead.Reading is an interactive process in which the readers background knowledge is needed to interact with the new information in the reading material(Grabe,1991,p.378).Being exposed to large amount of books, attentions are paid to meaning and information, and learners are given the opportunities to enlarge their background knowledge. Thus effective reading comprehension is more likely to happen(Patricia Johnson,1982).
